ALIAWest's first public event for 2010 attracts a crowd

ALIAWest’s first public event for 2010 took place last Wednesday afternoon at the UWA Science Library. The ALIAWest Icebreaker had a very encouraging turnout, with 40 people in attendance including eight students.

John Geijsman, the 2010 Convenor of ALIAWest, introduced the audience to our Committee members before providing a brief outline of ALIAWest’s exciting plans for 2010.

This was followed by a very interesting speech from Mr. R.J. (Gus) Ferguson, Director of Ferguson Architects, which is one of Western Australia’s most respected architectural practices and is responsible for the superb design of UWA’s new Science Library.

Mr. Ferguson provided our audience with an intriguing overview of the design of the building and pointed out some of the key factors and decisions involved in the development of this remarkable new library.

Our guests were then offered tours of the library by some of UWA’s librarians. These staff members did an excellent job of guiding us all through this extensive building and revealing its outstanding facilities and design.

Following the tours, we were privileged to receive a speech from Ms. Margaret Allen, CEO and State Librarian at the State Library of Western Australia. Ms. Allen, who recently became the vice-President and President-elect of ALIA’s Board of Directors, provided us with some keen insights into present and future issues facing the library and information sector in both W.A. and Australia as a whole. She also encouraged those present to take advantage of the benefits that ALIA provides to members of our profession.
