F A Sharr Medal Presentation

ALIAWest is delighted to announce Jessica Shortis as the 2007 winner for the prestigious F A Sharr Medal presented on the 9th of July. Sue Hutley, ALIA Executive Director, presented Jessica with the Medal at a function held at the Curtin University Graduate School of Business in Perth.

The F A Sharr Medal is awarded to the graduand who has just completed their final year of a library and information degree or diploma, or is in their first year of employment and exhibits the most potential and is most likely to have a positive impact on their preferred stream of the library profession.

The Medal is named after Francis Aubie Sharr, State Librarian in Western Australia from 1953 to 1976, in recognition of his contribution to libraries and librarianship in Western Australia and to the profession overall.

Whilst studying towards her Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Studies at Curtin University, Jessica worked at the Subiaco Library as a library officer. After completing her practicum at the Humanities and Social Sciences Library, University of Western Australia, and graduating as a qualified librarian, she was offered an ongoing full-time position at the UWA Law Library. Jessica was nominated for the award by two of her supervisors from the University of Western Australia.

During her interview, Jessica demonstrated a strong understanding of issues facing the library profession and the environment in which our industry operates. She gave an impressive presentation to guests on using relevant online technologies to better serve the typical generation Y user of academic libraries. Jessica has also completed degrees in Communications at Murdoch University and Advertising at Edith Cowan University and hopes to capitalise on this experience to raise the public profile of library and information services.

Due to the exceptional quality of the candidates applying for the F A Sharr Medal this year, the ALIAWest Committee decided that in addition to awarding the Medal they would make two highly commended awards to Naomi Gorrie and Karen Rickman.

The special guest speaker for the night was Liz Byrski who took the time to discuss the development of her career as a writer and broadcaster over the past 40 years. She is the author of eleven non-fiction books and three popular novels. Liz loves to support library professionals because they are people who are like her - lovers of books.

Jessica's presentation is available to be viewed at http://www.alia.org.au/awards/merit/sharr.medal/Jessica.Shortis.ppt
It is well worth a look!

Leading Libraries Event with Cheryl Edwardes: Leadership and how to manage your own career success

Cheryl Edwardes, former State Government MP, gave a presentation titled Leadership and how to manage your own career success for the Leading Libraries function hosted by Public Libraries Australia and ALIAWest. The event was very successful with 44 attendees.

Cheryl has a substantial CV and list of achievements which include:
Sixteen years service (four terms) as a member of Legislative Assembly for the Parliament of Western Australia (1989-2005), including eight years as a Cabinet Minister variously responsible for some 12 portfolio areas;
Qualified Barrister and Solicitor holding the distinction of being Western Australia's first female Attorney General; and
Cabinet and Parliamentary Committee appointments in a broad range of areas ranging from public sector management, justice, native title, budgetary matters, environment and heritage, anti-corruption, youth affairs, electoral reform, and parliamentary procedure.

Cheryl spoke about how she managed to have a successful career in politics and law whilst raising a family. Interestingly, she recounted her days of working at the University of Western Australia Library and spoke about how this was an ideal job whilst she was studying law as she was able to juggle her university attendance around her work.

Cheryl’s presentation covered how to build professional networks with colleagues and others with her stories taking on a personal touch, the art of management and delegation, and maintaining individual values, standards, ethics, and behaviours. She spoke of important personal traits such as care and consideration for fellow colleagues and taking an active interest in other people’s lives which she believes has helped her to achieve success. In regards to inspiring women, she mentioned that women have their own “feminine toughness” which so many women display through their public and personal roles as successful career women, mothers, and partners, and that this characteristic should encouraged. She said that women could be successful without sacrificing their identity or becoming "one of the boys".

ALIAWest and PLA are very grateful to Cheryl Edwardes for her inspirational presentation.

ALIAWest Icebreaker at Town of Vincent Library

The first ALIAWest event for this year was held at the new Town of Vincent Library. For those of us working in slightly more dated surrounds, we are envious! Vincent Library staff are rightfully proud of their spacious new library building.

We were thrilled to see 29 people at our Icebreaker, including 4 students. Jill Benn, Convenor of ALIAWest for 2008, introduced the committee to attendees and outlined some of our plans for 2008.

The tour was conducted by Senior Librarian Sheena Bell and Librarian Jocelyn Richard. The building was designed by Peter Hunt Architect who also designed the Town of Cambridge Library. The Library incorporates a Main Floor Space; Media Room which is used by the Library and Council to host public events; Training Room; open plan Children's Library with movable shelving; Young Adults Library (they're soon getting a Nintendo Wii for this area!); and Local Studies Collection with plenty of exhibition space and a climate controlled storage facility. The staff workroom has an open plan workroom, separate offices for the Library Manager and Senior Librarian, kitchen facilities, and storage room.

The ALIAWest Committee was very grateful to the Town of Vincent Library for being fantastic hosts. We were happy to see so many people attend the first event and hope to see your faces throughout the year!

We were treated to coffee afterwards by our generous host, Kerry Smith, which gave us a wonderful opportunity to network with the students in an informal setting.

It was great to be able to meet so many bright stars of the future. Thanks to Kerry Smith and the Curtin Library and Information Studies students.

ALIAWest looks forward to visiting Curtin and the other WA Library education providers later in 2008.
